Selected presenters are eligible for cash prizes; the general FAQ also describes a WSM-only NELA Trainee Poster Prize pathway.
Tables
One editable table is permitted instead of an image. It is excluded from the character limit, may contain no more than 12 rows, and must not be submitted as an image. Its editable description belongs in the abstract body and counts towards the character limit.

One high-quality image is permitted instead of a table. It must not be a collage; permission to use it is required, and its editable description must appear in the abstract body and counts towards the character limit.
Deadline
23:59 on Wednesday 2 September 2026; late submissions will not be accepted.
Approvals
Appropriate ethical and/or regulatory approval must be obtained before submission.
Structure
Audit/QI, education, NELA, original research, patient safety and survey: untitled introduction, then Methods, Results, Discussion, Acknowledgement(s), References. Case reports: Description, Discussion, Acknowledgements, References.
Categories
Audit & quality improvement; case reports or case studies; education and training; original research; survey.
Formatting
Title in sentence case; section headings in bold sentence case with no trailing full stop or colon; one paragraph only for each section; single line space between paragraphs.
References
Maximum two references with a combined limit of 500 characters.
Eligibility
The organiser invites everyone to submit; the NELA Trainee Poster Prize requires a trainee submitting and listed as presenting author.
Publication
All accepted abstracts will be published in the online supplement of Anaesthesia.
Title Limit
Maximum 300 characters.
Author Limit
Maximum six authors, all of whom must be entered at submission because authors cannot be added later.
Figures Tables
Only one image or one table is permitted per abstract. Images must be high quality, must not be collages, and require permission for use. Tables must be editable, not submitted as images, and contain no more than 12 rows. Images and tables need an editable description in the abstract body; that description counts towards the 2,500-character limit.
Review Process
Submitted abstracts undergo blind peer review by a shortlisting panel; decisions are final with no appeals or resubmission after rejection. Board/Education Committee members and faculty are excluded from assessing or chairing/judging sessions containing abstracts they co-authored.
Submission Fee
No charge to submit an abstract.
Character Limit
Maximum 2,500 characters including spaces; title and references excluded.
Co Author Limit
The PDF guidance states a maximum of six co-authors is permitted per abstract and that omitted co-authors will not be cited in any publication.
Patient Consent
Written patient consent is required for case reports or series; survey participants must agree to publication of their data/results.
Reference Format
References must be searchable, cited in the text as [1] or [1, 2], journal titles written in full, volume/year/page numbers included, and no superscript references.

Prior Publication
Work already published or submitted to a journal cannot be accepted as original work. Work presented elsewhere may be eligible if declared, but duplicate online publication is not permitted.
Scoring Framework
Audit/QI, case report/series, original research, survey and education/training abstracts are scored across four 1-5 domains out of 20. WSM-only NELA Trainee Poster abstracts are scored out of 25 across clarity, improved care, multidisciplinary involvement, use of local NELA data and QI methodology.
Image Requirements
One image may be used instead of a table; caption below the image; jpeg, tif or gif only; maximum 500KB; Word, PowerPoint, Excel and other unsupported formats are not accepted; low-quality images may be rejected during publication.
Table Requirements
One editable table may be used instead of an image; use the insert-table function, caption above the table, maximum 12 rows recommended for legibility, parametric data as mean (SD), non-parametric data as median (IQR [range]).
Withdrawal Changes
Abstracts cannot be altered after the closing date. Withdrawal is possible until the journal supplement is prepared, approximately four weeks before the meeting.
Results Requirement
Submissions must contain the essential results; prospective results promised after the deadline are not acceptable.

Presenter Requirement
If accepted, the first author or a listed co-author must register for the meeting at the appropriate rate; submission does not constitute registration.
Full Paper Opportunity
Selected work may be considered for publication as a full paper in Anaesthesia or Anaesthesia Reports.
Nela Prize Eligibility
The WSM-only NELA Trainee Poster Prize is for a project using the submitter’s hospital NELA data to improve care; a trainee must submit and be listed as presenting author.
Registration Condition
Acceptance is conditional on at least one author registering to attend in person; abstracts with no registered author by the deadline are withdrawn from the programme.
Publication Clarification
Accepted abstracts can be published in the online supplement of Anaesthesia if not already published elsewhere. Previously presented but unpublished work may still be eligible with declaration; work already or soon to be published in another journal/programme/online source cannot be double-published by the Association. Case reports accepted for Anaesthesia or Anaesthesia Reports cannot be submitted to an Association meeting.
